Do Californians really need more Lawyers or more Doctors?

As we speak (ca. March 2012) there are nearly 155,000 licensed attorneys in California. By contrast, there are only about 95,000 active doctors. Put another way, lawyers represent 1.3% of the total workforce in California.

The infestation of attorneys in California is reminiscent of the damage caused Californians regarding the invasion of the fruit fly. They have a much higher birthrate than that of any underdeveloped nation. Clearly, a reliable contraceptive device needs to be devised to reduce this unrelenting onslaught.

Let’s compare California’s attorney workforce infestation rate verses several other states as set forth in the textbox below. FYI: workforce population = Private non-farm employment per the U.S. Census Bureau.

How does the Legal Industry in California justify having two times as many lawyers as the six states listed in the textbox above?
