Attorney Janice Paul of Raleigh; certified Dufus The state of North Carolina presented Janice Perrin Paul with a law license in 1985.
The Grievance Committee of the North Carolina State Bar charged Jan with the following misconduct.
While employed as an assistant DA for Durham County, Jan was assigned to prosecute criminal charges against Louis Escobar who was charged with 1st Degree Sex Offense of a Child, Sexual Offense by a Person in Parental Role, and Indecent Liberties with a Child.
The victim in Escobar’s cases was the youngest daughter of Terrinni Wasson. Escobar was Wasson’s boyfriend but not the father of the child. During the investigation of Escobar, Wasson told investigators she didn’t believe the alleged sexual abuse of her daughter occurred.
After the conclusion of the State’s evidence at Escobar’s trial, the presiding judge dismissed the charges of 1st Degree Sex Offense of a Child and Sexual Offense by a Person in Parental Role. The trial then recessed for the lunch break.
The father of the child had primary custody of the child but Wasson had a visitation scheduled for the weekend of the trial which she was entitled to pursuant to a court order on custody. During the lunch break, Jan learned of Wasson’s impending visitation with the child.
Jan then ordered a police investigator to obtain warrants against Wasson for Aiding and Abetting1st Degree Sex Offense of a Child, Sexual Offense by a Person in Parental Role, and Indecent Liberties with a Child. Jan made it clear to the investigator that the warrants should be obtained promptly and Wasson should be arrested that day. Warrants were obtained and Wasson was arrested as she left the courtroom.
Jan the Moron absolutely knew that after the judge dismissed the sexual charges against Escobar that the State was prohibited from charging anyone for Aiding and Abetting non-existent criminal charges. Jan sought the sham criminal charges against Wasson for the purpose of preventing her weekend visitation with her daughter.
As a consequence of her misconduct the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Grievance Committee of the North Carolina State Bar punished Jan by gifting her with a complimentary stayed 1-year suspension of his law license. In truth, the comedians sitting on the Grievance Committee of the North Carolina State Bar didn’t mete out any meaningful punishment to Jan.
