Attorney Aloysius Wong of Tasmania; ethical troll

The Law Society of Tasmania provided Aloysius Tsze Kan Wong  with a law license in 1975 after he graduated from the University of Tasmania School of Law.

The Legal Profession Board of Tasmania found Aloysius guilty of engaging in the following misconduct.

  • Engaged in unsatisfactory professional misconduct
  • Failed to comply with costs disclosure obligations under Division 3 of Part 3.3 of the Legal Profession Act 2007
  • Breached fiduciary duties owed to his clients
  • Failed to disclose to his clients an estimate of the total legal costs if reasonably practicable or, if it was not reasonably practicable to estimate the total legal costs, a range of estimates of the total legal costs and an explanation of the major variables that will affect the calculation of those costs
  • Failed to advise his clients that there were competent solicitors and licensed conveyancers in greater Hobart who would be prepared to perform the clients’ conveyancing for considerably less cost for each transaction than the costs likely to be charged by Aloysius
  • Failed to advise his clients that his fees would be considerably higher than the amounts that would be charged by competent solicitors or licensed conveyancers in greater Hobart
  • Grossly overcharged his clients in that he charged legal costs for administrative or non-legal work (cheater)
  • Charged for work that was unnecessary
  • Spent inordinate amounts of time on irrelevant matters
  • Charged total legal costs that were many times in excess of what other competent and reputable solicitors or licensed conveyancers would charge for transactions of a similar nature
  • Made false or misleading statements to his clients regarding the legal costs charged by the other solicitors to the transactions in an email

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Legal Profession Board punished Aloysius by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. January 2024), Aloysius practices his so-called brand of law in Tasmania.
