Attorney Lee Smolen of Chicago: Today’s “Avarice” Award Winner

The state of Illinois presented Lee Mark Smolen with a law license in 1985 after he graduated from the University of Chicago Law School.

The Disciplinary Commission found Lee guilty of the following misconduct.

While working as a partner at Sidley Austin LLP, Lee fraudulently billed Sidley for almost $70,000 for 800 cab rides he never took. Overall, Lee billed Sidley for at least $119,000 in cab rides, country club dinners and tickets to sports events from 2007 to 2012.

In regards to the fraudulent tax cab fares, Lee fabricated taxi receipts averaging about $80 each stealing the $70,000 from his former law firm. In addition to the taxi fare fraud, Lee also fraudulently submitted expenses for the following:

  • $35,000 for sporting events
  • $13,000 in restaurant gift cars
  • $2,000 for meals at his country club on Mother’s Day

An unreliable source indicated that Lee attempted to bill Sidley for the costs he incurred in purchasing Industrial Strength Viagra but when asked about that allegation Lee replied “that would be hard to prove.”

As evidence that Lee was a greedy thief is the fact that he was paid $3.5 million in fees by the Sidley firm in 2011. In truth, Lee is a total embarrassment to hard working and dedicated attorney’s who have cheerfully bilked their law firms.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Illinois Supreme Court punished Bobby by gifting him with a complimentary 1-year suspension of his law license beginning in March 2015.

Because Attorney Misfits in Illinois are held to a much lower standard of conduct then everyone else, Lee was never criminally charged for grand larceny.

As of March 15, 2016, Lee will have his law license reinstated. He will then be able to go back to working for the DPA Piper law firm in Chicago.
