Judge Derek Hunt of Santa Ana, CA; ethical troll

The State of Arizona provided Derek W. Hunt with a law license in 1972 after he graduated from Cornell University School of Law.

FYI: Former Gov. Pete Wilson was duped into appointing Derek as an Orange County Superior Court Judge in 1997. Derek didn’t receive the appointment because he was the most qualified attorney in the greater Orange County area. He received it because he had proven to be a reliable lackey for the local political hacks.

It should be noted that this isn’t Derek’s First bite at the Judicial Misfit Tree. He previously received a complimentary admonishment for engaging in a variety of misconduct.

The California Commission on Judicial Performance found Derek guilty of engaging in the following misconduct.

• Engaged in misconduct in four civil cases, as set forth below.
• In three of those cases, Derek denied the parties a full right to be heard before making orders in their cases (aka, due process)
• Derek made remarks reflecting poor demeanor
• Engaged in conduct that gave an appearance of bias
• Failed to act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary
• Derek’s conduct in awarding less than one percent of the requested attorney fees and costs, without explanation, gave the appearance that he acted arbitrarily and was not impartial
• Was impatient and discourteous when dealing with parties appearing before him
• Failed to fully appreciate the impropriety of his remarks as an additional aggravating factor

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the Judicial Performance Commission punished Tony by ordering that he be removed from the bench.

As we speak (ca. June 2024), Derek continues to dispense his so-called brand of jurisprudence as an Orange County Superior Court judge in Santa Anta, California.
