Rep. Alcee Hastings (FL): Today’s “Avarice” Award Winner

Congratulations to….

Rep. Alcee Hastings (FL)

Today’s “Avarice” Award Winner

Alcee has had his significant snout firmly implanted in the public trough 36 years, 13 as a judge and 23 as a congressman. It should be remembered that Alcee was the last federal judge to be impeached by congress. His impeachment came about due to a criminal charge of accepting a $150,000 bribe to render a favorable judicial decision.

If it weren’t for a government check, Alcee would likely be working as a greeter at the Walmart on North State Road 7 in Fort Lauderdale.

During a recent (May 2015) rant, Alcee spoke in support of a pay raise for members of Congress before the House Rules Committee. Alcee argued that the current pay system doesn’t offer enough incentives for less-affluent citizens to enter public service. He went on to say:

  • “I will say it until I leave, members deserve to be paid, staff deserve to be paid and the cost of living here [DC] is causing serious problems for people who are not wealthy to be able to serve in this institution.”

This ingrate is paid $174,000 a year which is almost three times the average earnings of folks who actually work for a living. If Alcee retired as we speak (2015) his annual pension would be somewhere around $80,000. He would also receive lifetime health insurance coverage.

As of 2013, Alcee’s net worth was $4.7 million. Since he’s 78-years-old, it is likely that he is receives a $2,442 monthly check from Social Security.

For this convicted felon and lifetime porker to suggest that he deserves more than $174,000 for a part time job as a member of Congress doesn’t pass the involuntary laugh test.

If $174,000 isn’t enough, then I suggest that Alcee resign from Congress and try living on a $84,000 pension plus $27,000 in social security benefits.

Congrats Alcee; keep up the good work! We should let everyone know of your amazing record as one of Americas Least Appreciated “Money-Grubbers”; you are far too humble.
