Attorney John Lopes of Monroe, NY; cheater, repeat offender

The state of New York presented John C. Lopes with a law license in 1978 after he graduated from Fordham University Law School.

The Appellate Division, Second Department found Johnny guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
  • Engaged in conduct adversely reflecting on fitness to practice law
  • Failed to cooperate with ethics investigators (Up yours, said Johnny!)
  • Court ruled that Johnny engaged in frivolous conduct
  • Trial court ordered show cause contempt hearing
  • Ordered to pay opposing counsel $825 in fees
  • Failed to comply with court orders in a timely manner
  • Failed to appear at court ordered hearing
  • Court sanction of $500 for failing to appear at hearing
  • Failed to pay $500 court sanction as ordered to do
  • Failed to promptly return unearned fee (cheater)
  • Charged or collected fee in divorce action w/o written fee agreement being signed by Johnny and the client and w/o providing client with statement of his rights/responsibilities

As one would suspect, this wasn’t Johnny’s First bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree. He previously received two (2) complimentary admonitions for engaging in a variety of misconduct.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Appellate Division, Second Department panel punished Johnny by gifting him with a complimentary 3-year suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. January 2016), Johnny practices at 5 North Main Street in Monroe, New York.
