Attorney Kayla Alves of Augusta, ME; ethical troll

The state of Maine presented Kayla M. Alves with a law license in 2018 after she graduated from the University of Maine Law School.

Panel E of the Grievance Commission of the Maine Board of Bar Overseers found Johnny guilty of the following misconduct.

• The public and the legal system were harmed by Attorney Alves's actions in deleting evidence during the course of an investigation
• Engaged in conduct adversely reflecting on her fitness to practice
• Kayla deleted text messages which were evidence relevant to an ongoing criminal investigation
• Kayla violated duties to the public and to the profession
• She knowingly destroyed evidence during the course of a criminal investigation, thereby committing criminal conduct
• At the time she engaged in destroying evidence, she was an assistant district attorney and should have been well aware of the seriousness of her conduct
• Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty, or misrepresentation
• Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
• Found guilty after a plea of guilty to a serious crime
• Unlawfully obstructed another party's access to evidence or unlawfully altered, destroyed or concealed a document or other material having potential evidentiary value

As a direct consequence of her misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court punished Kayla by gifting her with a complimentary 9-month suspension of her law license.
