Attorney Matthew Gurvey of Chicago; check bouncing cheater

The state of Illinois presented Matthew Eric Gurvey with a law license in 1994 after he graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Law.

FYI: Southern Illinois is ranked as the 166th best law school in the country out of 202 ABA accredited schools.

The Disciplinary Commission found Matty guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Used funds of former client to pay debt of another client
  • Issued check that was dishonored (rubber)
  • Made misrepresentations to the person who was supposed to receive the funds involving rubber check
  • Used client funds received in connection with the purchase of property for his own personal purposes
  • Failed to promptly pay funds owed to a client or third party
  • Commingled client funds with personal funds
  • Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty or misrepresentation

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Illinois Supreme Court punished Matty by gifting him with a complimentary 1-year suspension of his law license.
