Attorney Jennifer Blackburn of Keaau, HI; ethical goblin

The state of California provided Jennifer Kay Blackburn with a law license in 2001 after she graduated from the University of California Davis Law College.

The State Bar Court found Jennifer guilty of the following misconduct.

Jennifer admitted to eight (8) counts of misconduct involving two matters. For several years, Jennifer worked for a Fresno law firm where she was assigned to handle bankruptcy matters for two women. Although the women were domestic partners, they were filing for bankruptcy separately. Subsequently, Jennifer left the firm but said she would continue to work on the case in question without further compensation from the clients.

However, Jennifer did not further work and never filed the required bankruptcy petitions. One of her clients was sued for a credit card debt. The client provided Jennifer with information about the debt, but she did not respond to the client’s messages. The client then went to Central California Legal Services Inc.; one of its attorneys spoke with Jennifer who said she would help the clients with their filings; however, she lied because she did no further work.

The second matter was also a bankruptcy case for which the client paid a $635 fee to Jennifer. Jennifer told him that she had everything she needed to file the petition. The client called her once a month for more than a year without a response. When he went to her office, it was empty and the fax was disconnected.
Blackburn never filed the bankruptcy petition.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the supporters for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Bar Court punished Jennifer by gifting her with a complimentary stayed 1-year suspension of her law license.

As we speak (ca. April 2013) Jennifer practices at 16-540 Keaau Pahoa Road in Keaau, Hawaii.
