Attorney Libio Calejo of Doral, FL; repeat offender, cheater

The state of Florida presented Libio Calejo with a law license in 2004 after he graduated from St. Thomas University Law College.

The Florida Bar found Libio guilty of the following misconduct on two separate occasions.

Libio’s 1st bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree – 2013
  • Failed to respond to ethics complaint (Up Yours, said Libio!)
  • Violated or attempted to violate Professions Rules of Conduct by assisting or inducing another to do so, or do so through the acts of another
Libio’s misconduct involved his so-called representation of Martha Hughes who subsequently filed an ethics complaint against him.

As a consequence of her misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Florida Supreme Court punished Libio by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

Libio’s 2nd bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree – 2013

  1. Failed to provide competent legal services (idiot)
  2. Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
  3. Failed to act with candor toward a tribunal
  4. Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonest or misrepresentation
  5. Failed to adequately supervise non-attorney office staff
  6. Failed to communicate with clients
  7. Charged excessive fees (cheater)

Libio represented 20 debtors in Federal Bankruptcy court. The bankruptcy petitions and schedules filed by Libio in many of the cases contained inaccuracies, leading to numerous amendments being filed. The amendments prepared by Libio often failed to correct the original inaccuracies, and created new ones which resulted in unreasonably delays in the cases themselves.

Libio’s court filings also contained misrepresentations regarding the compensation he received for his services. Making matters worse, Libio failed to appear at a number of court scheduled creditor’s meetings. His failure to appear resulted in the dismissal of most of his clients’ bankruptcy cases.

As a result of Libio’s gross misfeasance, the bankruptcy Trustee filed nine (9) Motions for Disgorgement of attorney fees paid to Libio. Eight of the motions were granted. Thereafter, Libio failed to provide timely proof of payment to the clients as ordered by the court.

The court then scheduled a sanctions hearing, but Libio failed to appear. However, several of his clients did appear and some of them informed the Court that they had never met Libio, and that their communications were with non-lawyer personnel at his office. Based upon that testimony, the Court issued Orders to Show Cause in all eight cases. Libio failed to respond to the Orders to Show Cause and also failed to appear at the Show Cause hearing.

As a consequence of her misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Florida Supreme Court punished Libio by gifting him with a complimentary 1-year suspension of his law license. In addition, Libio was ordered to reimburse his victims as follows:

  • $2,000 to Julio Castillo
  • $2,000 to Marcus and Fernanda Araujo
  • $2,500 to Livia Segura
  • $2,500 to Michael Perez
  • $1,200 to Jose Ben

As we speak (ca. May 2013) Libio practices at 2500 NW 79th Avenue in Doral, Florida.
