Attorney Angelique Layton of Louisville, CO; ethical misfit The state of Colorado provided Angelique with a law license in 2005 after she graduated from the University of Denver Law School.
The Colorado State Bar found Angie guilty of the following misconduct.
Angie represented a client in several different matters. Angie then hired the client to clean her house and to work on her political campaign. Angie planned to offset the money she owed her client for that work against the legal fees her client owed her. However, Angie never specified the hourly rate the client would be credited for her work.
Angie also posted bond for the client and paid the client’s rent and vehicle impound fees, which she knew were not legitimate litigation expenses. Such conduct clearly involved a conflict of interest.
Lastly, Angie provided the client legal advise by filing the client’s income taxes. She did so with the expectation that the client’s tax refund would be applied to amounts the client owed her for posting bond. Angie’s personal interest in obtaining the tax refund created a significant conflict of interest.
As a consequence of her misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Colorado Supreme Court punished Angie by gifting her with a complimentary stayed 6-month suspension of her law license.
In truth, the comedians sitting on the Colorado Supreme Court didn’t actually mete out any meaningful punishment to Angie.
