Judge John Free of Port Allen; LA; ethical leprechaun

The state of Louisiana presented John Robin Free with a law license in 1989 after he graduated from Florida State University Law School.

The Louisiana Judiciary Commission found Judge Free guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Accepted all-expense paid trip by attorney whose client just won million dollar settlement in Johnny’s courtroom
  • Remained on class-action lawsuit even though his mother had a potential financial interest in the outcome
  • Conduct caused public to exhibit disrespect for the judiciary
  • Engaged in an egregious conflict of interest
  • Failed to remove himself from case when removal required
  • Conduct harmed the integrity of the judiciary

As a consequence of his misconduct, the Patron Saints for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Louisiana Supreme Court punished Judge Free by gifting him with a complimentary 30-day suspension from the bench.

As we speak (ca. January 2015), Judge Free remains sitting as a District Court judge in Port Allen, Louisiana.
