Judge James Best of New Roads, LA; repeat offender

The state of Louisiana presented James J. Best with a law license in 1987 after he graduated from Wayne State University Law School.

The Judiciary Commission of Louisiana found Judge Best guilty of the following misconduct.

Jimmy’s 1st bite at the Judicial Misfit Tree

  • Commented publicly to media re: case of State v Hernandez
  • Failed to maintain decorum in judicial proceedings
  • Commented publicly to media re: case of State v Coleman
  • Polled audience as to guilty of defendant in assault case
  • Physically grabbed juvenile defendant in open court

As a consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Louisiana Supreme Court punished Judge Best by gifting him with a complimentary censure.

In one matter, Judge Best presided over the case of then 33-year-old assistant cheerleading coach at Livonia High School, Antonio Garcia. (WAFB, Kiran Chawla)

Garcia’s email account contained sexually explicit pictures of Ms. Donohue, 16 at the time, and separate images of a naked adult male. Subsequently, Judge Best executed an arrest warrant charging Garcia with indecent behavior with a juvenile.

Several months later, Garcia entered into a plea deal approved by Judge Best, which contained the following requirements.

  • Seven years of hard labor with credit for time already served
  • Five years of active supervised probation
  • Registration as a sex offender

Garcia’s attorney Tommy Damico signed the plea deal. However, two years later, Garcia filed a motion to terminate his 5-year term of probation. Judge best then terminated all conditions of Garcia’s probation sentence.

Subsequently, investigators for the I-team at WAFB learned that Judge Best and Garcia the child molester had become friends while attending St. Mary Catholic Church of False River and singing in the choir.

In truth, Judge Best is yet another apologist and enabler for convicted child molesters. Put simply, in Garcia’s case, he was singing the same tune Garcia was while they played footsy at St. Mary’s.

All that’s left now is to see what if any punishment is meted out to Judge Best by the Patron Saints for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Louisiana Supreme Court.

As we speak (ca. April 2016), Best continues to sit as an 18th Judicial District Court judge in New Roads, Louisiana.
