Attorney Matthew Lewiss of Westerly, RI; ethical misfit

The state of Rhode Island presented Matthew L. Lewiss with a law license in 1968 after he graduated from Boston University Law School.

The Rhode Island Ethics Commission found Matt guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Engaged in conduct adversely reflecting on fitness to practice law
  • Used client secret or confident of client for advantage of another
  • Engaged in a conflict of interest

In addition to practicing law, Matt was the former Clerk of the Misquamicut Fire District.

While employed by the Fire District, Matt was fined $15,000 for failing to recuse himself from various Fire District Meetings at which matters involving a contract between Maurice J. Murphy, a former client of Matt’s and the Fire District were discussed.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Bar Court punished Matt by gifting him with a complimentary 3-year suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. March 2014) Matt practices with Lewiss Law Associates, LLP at 79 Franklin Street in Westerly, Rhode Island.
