Attorney Jay Morrey of Norcross, GA; ethical dwarf

The state of Georgia presented Jay Harvey Morrey with a law license in 2002 after he graduated from the University of South Carolina Law School.

The Georgia State Bar found Jay guilty of the following misconduct.

In one matter, Jay was hired to represent a client regarding injuries sustained in an auto accident. Five months later, Jay sent the client an e-mail telling her of a $3,000 settlement offer, discussing his demand letter for $43,953.40 and advising her to file a lawsuit. Jay then filed the lawsuit but did not meet with his client prior to filing it.

Jay also failed to prepare his client for her deposition by defense counsel and did not keep her informed about the case. Subsequently, Jay dismissed the lawsuit without prejudice (right to refile); however, he failed to inform his client about the dismissal before filing it and did not obtain her permission to do so.

After Jay dismissed the case, defense counsel filed a motion for fees and expenses. Jay filed a response on his own behalf by not on his client’s behalf. Jay also failed to advise his client to hire new counsel so she could in fact file a response.

As a result of Jay’s egregious negligence, the trial court entered an order awarding fees against Jay and his client for $5,238; however, Jay did not advise his client about the order. Jay then filed an appeal of the court order but only on his own behalf. The Court of Appeals denied the application; however, Jay again failed to advise his client of the appellate court ruling.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Georgia Supreme Court punished Jay by gifting him with a complimentary 18-month suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. August 2013), Jay practices with the Morrey Legal Group, LLC in Norcross, Georgia,
