Attorney Stephen Gorey of Tucson; ethical elf

The state of Arizona presented Stephen Gorey with a law license in 1975 after he graduated from Arizona State University Law School.

The Arizona State Bar found Stephen guilty of the following misconduct.

In one matter, Stephen was hired to represent two clients in a personal injury case. At the clients’ request, Stephen rented a car for them without telling them that such an act would create a conflict of interest. He also did not obtain written, informed consent regarding the car rental.

After settlement of the personal injury matter for one of the clients, Stephen wanted to be reimbursed for the rental car bill and made an agreement that most of the fee would come out of the settlement proceeds. When the other client was offered a settlement, Stephen agreed to waive his fee and requested that both clients sign a legal malpractice waiver in Stephen’s favor.

After obtaining the self-serving malpractice waive, Stephen the Buffoon then filed a motion with the trial court to withdraw his representation by citing of conflict of interest.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders of Attorney Misfits sitting on the Arizona Supreme Court punished Stephen by gifting him with a complimentary censure.

As we speak (ca. July 2013) Stephen practices at 115 West Washington Street in Tucson, Arizona.
