Attorney Stephen Merlin of Brockton, MA; thief

The state of Massachusetts presented Stephen H. Merlin with a law license in 1975.

The Board of Bar Overseers found Stephen guilty of the following misconduct.

In one matter, Stephen was hired to draft a will and trust for a client, Israel Rotblit. The terms of the trust, Stephen was to become the trustee upon Mr. Rotblit’s death and then distribute the trust’s assets to the designated non-charitable and charitable beneficiaries.

After Mr. Rotblit died, Stephen paid the non-charitable beneficiaries, but failed to pay the charitable beneficiaries. Instead, Stephen converted almost $85,000 of trust funds to his own personal use. Stephen then lied to an attorney for one of the charitable beneficiaries regarding the matter.

In another matter, Stephen was appointed to represent an indigent client on a criminal appeal. He twice neglected to file the appeal brief which resulted in a dismissal of the client’s appeal. Both times, he failed to notify t he client of the dismissals.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Board of Overseers punished Stephen by gifting him with a complimentary two-year suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. July 2013) Stephen practices with the Law Offices of Stephen H. Merlin PC at 7 Christys Drive in Brockton, Massachusetts.
