Attorney Gary Melvin of Dover, DE; convict

The state of Delaware presented Gary S. Melvin with a law license in 1981 after he graduated from Widener University Law School.

The Delaware Supreme court found Gary guilty of the following misconduct while he was employed as a Public Defender.
  1. Intentionally destroyed documents having potential evidentiary value
  2. Engaged in conduct adversely reflecting on fitness to practice law
  3. Knowingly violate a court order
  4. Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty or misrepresentation
  5. Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
  6. Committed a criminal act
  7. Failed to recognize the seriousness of his misconduct
  8. Misconduct reflected dishonest or selfish motive
Gary pled guilty to two criminal acts: (1) criminal contempt of a protection from abuse order, and (2) hindering prosecution. Gary admitted that he knowingly violated or refused to obey a protective order issued by the Family Court.

The protective order prohibited Gary from having contact with his wife. Gary also admitted to hindering police by concealing or destroying his wife’s journal of papers, which would have aided in the lodging a criminal charge against him.

The Superior Court sentenced Gary to two years at Level V incarceration which was entirely suspended for lesser levels of supervision.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Delaware Supreme Court punished Gary by gifting him with a complimentary 18-month suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. May 2013) Gary practices at 108 East Water Street in Dover, Delaware.
