Judge John Chmura of Warren, MI; ethical dwarf
The state of Michigan presented Ralph C. Warman with a law license in 1972 after he graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School.
Former Attorney General Frank Kelley was duped into appointing John as 37th District Court judge in 1996. John didn’t get the appointment because he was the most qualified lawyer in the greater Detroit area. He obtained the appointment by acting as a compliant lackey for the local political hacks.
During his tenure on the bench, the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission charged John with misconduct involving campaign fliers he distributed in an effort to be elected after he was appointed by Frank Kelley.
It was alleged that the fliers were racist and misleading (false). In his fliers, John allegedly sullied the dignity of judges everywhere, which included a portrayal of former Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young toting taxpayers’ money from Warren to Detroit. Critics of Judge Chmura (there were many of them) labeled his ad against Mayor Young as racist.
The comedians sitting on the Michigan Supreme Court subsequently dismissed the complaint on the laughable grounds that if they found Johnny guilty of misconduct, they would likely be infringing on his 1st Amendment free speech rights.
Of course these same comedians have a totally different take on the 1st Amendment when it involved a lawyer attacking the integrity of a judge.
As we speak (ca. April 2013) Johnny remains sitting as a 37th District Court Judge in Warren, Michigan, which is a suburb of Detroit.
