Sheriff Sam Parker of Chesterfield, SC; Today’s Public Official Misfit

 
On March 13, 2013, Sheriff Parker was indicted and charged with four counts of misconduct in office and two counts of furnishing contraband to inmates.
 
The indictment returned by the State Grand Jury, included allegations that Parker:
  1. Allowed inmates to go shopping and eat out
  2. To wear civilian clothing
  3. Live outside jail in exchange for doing work at his home
Special favors for inmate Michael Lee
 
Mr. Lee was convicted of felony arson and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
 
In regards to inmate Michael Lee, Parker allowed him to live and sleep outside the jail inside the sheriff’s armory. Parker also allowed Lee to possess items which were banned, such as a TV, clothes, drugs, alcohol, photo ID, refrigerator, grill, I-Pad, personal computer and other items.
 
Lee was also allowed to drive a sheriff’s office vehicle in Chesterfield County, and was allowed to host dinner parties in the armory and have dinner in restaurants in North and South Carolina.
 
Special favors for inmate William Skipper
 
Mr. Skipper was convicted of felony drug trafficking and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
  1. Parker allowed Skipper to drive Sheriff Office vehicles
  2. Skipper was given access to firearms
  3. He was allowed to spend holidays with his family
  4. Allowed to have unsupervised visits with female visitor
  5. He was permitted to take shopping trips to various places in North and South Carolina
  6. He ate meals at Sheriff Parker’s home with other law enforcement officers
Parker stated that he plans to fight to stay in office. He said he will not resign from office.
 
All that’s left now is to see if the sentencing judge has the courage to send Parker off to prison for a few years.
