Former Judge Janet Reese of Pickens, SC: convicted tax cheat

Janet previously sat as a Municipal Judge in Pickens County, South Carolina in the town of Central.

In late 2012, Judge Reese pleaded guilty in federal court to various crimes involving her preparation of tax returns.

Judge Reese ran her own tax preparation business. She prepared and filed multiple tax returns for clients for the 2008 tax year, claiming a tax credit for first time homebuyers.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said Janet’s clients had not bought any homes, and that she had the fabricated tax refunds deposited into an account that she personally controlled.

Authorities estimated that Judge Reese filed nearly $500,000 in sham tax refunds.

As a consequence of her criminal conduct, Janet was recently (ca. Feb 2013) sentenced to 2-years in a federal prison.
