Attorney Jennifer Bonifield of Brandon, FL; ethical dwarf

The state of Florida provided Jennifer Aycock Bonifield with a law license in 2002 after she graduated from Tulane University Law School.

The Florida State Bar found Jennifer guilty of the following misconduct.
  1. Failed to abide by client’s decisions regarding representation
  2. Failed to adequately communicate with clients
  3. Failed to respond to repeated inquires received form clients
  4. Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
  5. Engaged in a pattern of misconduct
  6. Misconduct involved multiple offenses
  7. Engaged in bad faith obstruction of disciplinary investigation (Up Yours, said Jennifer!)
  8. Submitted false evidence and/or made false statements during disciplinary proceedings
  9. Failed to comply with subpoena received from State Bar
In one matter, Jennifer was retained by optometrists Dr. Jeffrey Sinclair and Dr. Lori Camp to represent them in an eminent domain action against Sarasota County.

Several months later, Jennifer told Dr. Sinclair that she had prepared the lawsuit and that she would forward it to him for his review; however she failed to do so. Several days later, Jennifer sent an email to Dr. Sinclair apologizing for forgetting to forward the lawsuit and promised to send it; however, she failed to do so. One week later, Jennifer repeated the same lie to Dr. Sinclair.

Two weeks later, Jennifer told Dr. Sinclair that new inverse condemnation case law was coming out and she needed to consider its impact before she sent him the lawsuit. Several days later, Jennifer sent the law suit to Dr. Sinclair for review; however the body of the complaint was copied from another case involving completely different circumstances and issues.

During the time of the representation, Dr. Sinclair made several attempts to speak to Jennifer about the status of his case. Jennifer repeatedly failed to respond to Dr. Sinclair’s telephone calls, emails and voice messages. In one email, Dr. Sinclair to Jennifer he detailed his ongoing frustration with her lack of communication. The next day, Jennifer told Dr. Sinclair she would refund his retainer fee if he decided not to file suit against her. Jennifer made several promises to return the unearned retainer fee to Dr. Sinclair by failed to do so until about one year later.

As a consequence of her misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Florida Supreme Court punished Jennifer by gifting her with a complimentary 90-day suspension of her law license.
