Attorney William Fogel of Portland, ME; lying loser

The state of Maine presented William A. Fogel with a law license in 1992 after he graduated from the Thomas Jefferson Law School in 1980.

The Board of Bar Overseers found William guilty of the following misconduct.
  1. Engaged in conduct unworthy of an attorney (Pray tell!)
  2. Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
  3. Improperly concealed information he was required to disclose
  4. Engaged in improper conduct towards opposing counsel
William represented Anne Dickstein in a civil matter in the U.S. District Court of Maine located in Portland. Subsequently, the trial judge was advised that William’s current office manager had previously worked on the Dickstein case while employed as the trial court’s case manager. As a result, the trial judge suggested that counsel for both parties review the docket sheet to confirm whether that former case manager’s service to the Court on that case had actually resulted in any issue for the Court or counsel.

William knowingly and intentionally lied to the trial court when he was specifically asked if his current office manager had anything to do with the Dickstein case while she was employed by the Court.

In truth, after State Farm’s attorney had earlier filed its confidential documents with the Court in the Dickstein case, those documents were in fact handled and reviewed by William’s office manager in her form capacity as case manager for the Court. Michael actually became aware of these facts several months before he intentionally lied to the trial court.

As a consequence of her misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the grievance panel punished William by gifting him with yet another complimentary 90-day suspension of his law license.

As we speak (November 2012) William practices with the Cope Law Firm at One William Street in Portland,
