Attorney Charlotte Hassett of Hana, HI; unethical Dumbo
The state of California provided Charlotte A. Hassett with a law license in 1989 after she graduated from Southwestern University Law School in Los Angeles.
The California Bar Court found Charlotte guilty of the following misconduct.
Charlotte was hired to pursue a malpractice claim against a hospital and two doctors for performing an unauthorized procedure on their infant son. After filing the lawsuit, Charlotte failed to appear at two court-ordered hearings and as a result the case was dismissed.
Charlotte never told her client’s that their lawsuit was dismissed because she failed to attend two hearings. In fact, she never responded to at least 8 phone calls messages from her clients seeking information on the case.
Subsequently the trial court reinstated the case; however, Charlotte was sanctioned $500 when she didn’t appear for a status conference. She was sanctioned another $780 when she failed to appear at yet another hearing. Charlotte never told her clients about the dismissal or reinstatement of the case.
After firing Charlotte and hiring another attorney, the case was settled during arbitration proceedings.
As a consequence of his misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the California Bar Court punished Jerome by gifting him with a complimentary stayed 1-year suspension of her law license. In truth, the comedians sitting on the Bar Court didn’t mete out any meaningful punishment to Charlotte.
As we speak (ca. October 2012) Charlotte continues to practice in Hana, Hawaii.
