Attorney Paul Goetz of Wausau, WI; ethical goblin

The state of Wisconsin presented Paul M. Goetz with a law license in 1973 after he graduated from Marquette University Law School.

The Office of Lawyer Registration (OLR) found Paul guilty of the following misconduct.

Paul’s misconduct came about during his successful effort to dupe the voters into electing him as the District Attorney for Lincoln County, Wisconsin.

Paul thought it was acceptable to use a fictitious name of an alleged resident of Merrill, Wisconsin in signing a letter that was critical of the elected DA of Lincoln County. Paul submitted the sham letter to a newspaper for publication.

Prior to his defeat at the polls, the former DA asked the Lincoln County Sheriff to investigate the three letters he received, which the FBI later determined to have originated from a typewriter in Paul’s office.

The former DA and local newspaper made public records requests for copies of the sheriff’s file material regarding the investigation. Paul, who knew he was being investigated in regards to requested records, attempted to persuade the county corporation attorney to advise the sheriff not to release the records, which he knew violated the Code of Conduct.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Wisconsin Supreme
Court punished Paul by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. October 2012) Paul continues to practice in the Wausau, Wisconsin area.
