Attorney Thomas Awen of Milwaukee; serial thief

The state of Wisconsin presented Thomas J. Awen with a law license in 1988 after he graduated from Marquette University Law School.
The Office of Lawyer Registration (OLR) found Thomas guilty of the following misconduct.
  1. Engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation
  2. Repeatedly charging a clearly illegal/excessive
During the time of his misconduct, most of Tom’s law practice involved appointments from the State Public Defender (SPD). An audit of Tom’s billing statements disclosed that he billed and was paid for many hours of work that either he had not performed or that he had mischaracterized.
In numerous cases Tom billed the SPD for the following:
  1. Work in excess of 24 hours in a single day (workaholic)
  2. For time to attend court hearings when court records prove no hearings were held
  3. Billed for more hours to attend hearings than the actual time for the hearings
  4. Billed several cases for the same hours he spent waiting in court (double/triple dipping)
  5. Regularly billed more than 18 hours per day for work on several cases
Because Attorney Misfits in Wisconsin are held to a much lower standard of conduct then everyone else, Thomas was never criminally indicted for fraud and/or grand theft.
As a consequence of her misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Wisconsin Supreme
Court punished Thomas by gifting him with a complimentary 90-day suspension of his law license.
As we speak (ca. September 2012) Thomas practices with the Law Offices of Thomas J. Awen at 740 North Plankinton Avenue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
