Attorney Richard C. Watson of Jacksonville, FL; ethically inept
The state of Florida presented Richard with a law license in 1992.
The Florida State Bar found Richard guilty of the following misconduct.
Diane and Robert Wortelboer hired Richard to pursue a medical malpractice action as to surgery that Diane underwent. The Wortelboer’s expressed their concern about the statute of limitations for filing a medical malpractice action when employed Richard.
Over a period of at least three months, the Wortelboer’s repeatedly attempted to contact Richard but he never responded to their calls. They then traveled to Richard’s office but he wasn’t there. They then received a letter from him stating that “we have two years from the date of the surgery to file a lawsuit so we are well within the time frame.”
After receipt of the letter, the Wortelboer’s repeated attempts over the next several months to communicate with Richard were ignored. After almost one year of being ignored by Richard, the Wortelboer’s fired him and filed an ethics complaint against him.
As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Florida Supreme Court punished Richard by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.
