Judge Douglas McKeon of Bronx, NY; ethical dwarf

The State of New York provided Douglas Edwin McKeon with a law license in 1976 after he graduated from Albany Law School.

The New York Judicial Commission found Judge McKeon guilty of the following misconduct while sitting as a Justice of the Supreme Court, 12th District, Bronx County, New York.

FYI: A Supreme Court judge in New York is the same as a Superior Court, District Court or Common Pleas Judge in other states, all of which are trial level courts.

Stephen was assigned to hear all cases involving the torts division of the City Dept. of Law.

A former employee of the Supreme Court was hired as a legal assistant in the torts division but was working as a volunteer pending her placement on a salary line. She was a single mother with an asthmatic child.

She told Douglas that she was concerned about not having health insurance. Stephen then sent a letter to the chief of the torts division of the city Dept. of Law seeking the immediate hiring of a female as a legal assistant. As a result of Douglas’ personal intervention, the woman was placed on a salary line and began receiving health insurance coverage sooner than she would if Douglas had not made the demand on her behalf.

In less than a week after sending the letter to the Law Dept. Douglas embarked on a close, personal relationship with the woman. When the relationship was discovered, the chief of he Law Dept. fired the woman despite Douglas’ attempts to intervene on her behalf.

Douglas also found it acceptable to give interviews to the New York Times wherein he would discuss the merits of cases pending before him. Douglas’ comments clearly indicated a bias against certain types of defendants.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Judicial Commission punished Douglas by gifting him a complimentary censure.

As we speak (ca. August 2012) Douglas continues to sit as on the Supreme Court in the Bronx.
