Attorney William J. Helzlsouer of Harrisburg, PA; serial liar, loser

The state of Pennsylvania presented William James Helzlsouer with a law license in 1973.

The Office of Disciplinary Counsel found William guilty of the following misconduct.

Sarah Everett and her son Markle hired William to represent Ms. Everett in a civil suit against Round Hill Cemetery. William was paid a $2,000 retainer and agreed his fees would be $195 an hour and $495 a day for court appearances at hearings or trial. William then filed a lawsuit against Round Hill Cemetery and Rush Funeral Home.

Rush Funeral Home and Round Hill Cemetery filed summary judgment motions to have the case dismissed. Judge Timothy O’Reilly granted the motions and the case was dismissed. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Everett’s daughter, Janet Cogar called William about the status of her mother’s lawsuit. William lied to her by telling her another hearing was scheduled in the case. He also told her that her mother lost the case.

Ms. Cogar made repeated calls to William in response to his statement to her about another hearing and that her mother had lost the case; however, he never responded. Ms. Everett then sent William a certified letter asking him (a) why he hadn’t returned any of her phone calls, (b) why he didn’t inform her that she had a right to file an appeal, and (c) why he hadn’t returned her paperwork and deeds to the graves she owned. William never responded to the certified letter and he never returned the deeds.

In another matter, Ms. Pershing hired William to pursue a medical malpractice claim. He did nothing in the case and refused to return her medical records to her when she fired him even though the request came from her new attorney.

In yet another matter, Mr. Skorich hired William to appeal a civil case he had lost. As usual, his appeal was dismissed when William failed to file a court-ordered in support of his client’s motion. As with the other victims, William refused to respond to repeated calls regarding the status of his case.

Of course this wasn’t William’s 1st bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree. He had previously received a complimentary private reprimand for some of the same conduct listed above.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court punished William by gifting him with a stayed 90-day suspension of his law license. In truth, the comedians on the Court didn’t punish William in any significant way.

As we speak (ca. June 2012) William continues to practice law in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area.
