Attorney Douglas Romero of Denver; cheater, repeat offender
The state of Colorado provided Douglas Leo Romero with a law license in 2004 after he graduated from Willamette University School of Law.
FYI: This isn’t Doug’s First bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree. He previously received a complimentary censure for engaging in a variety of misconduct.
The Colorado State Bar found Doug guilty of engaging in the following misconduct.
-
Commingled client funds with personal funds
-
Failed to maintain required client trust account records
-
Mismanaged more than $16,000.00 that he had secured on behalf of his client and that he should have held in trust for the benefit of two children under his client’s legal guardianship
-
On multiple occasions, Doug’s trust account balances dropped well below the amount he should have held to safeguard the children’s funds and other clients’ money
-
Failed to maintain a ledger or other recordkeeping system to track the children’s money
-
At one point, Doug’s accountant discovered a shortfall in the trust accounts of approximately $34,000.00, which Romero replenished from personal funds.
-
Because of Doug’s poor recordkeeping, however, neither his accountant nor disciplinary authorities were able to trace what became of the missing money
-
Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty, or misrepresentation
-
Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
-
Knowingly made a false statement of material fact or law to a tribunal
-
Engaged in the illegal practice of law in a jurisdiction he was not licensed in
-
Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
-
Failed to keep client informed of status of matter
-
Entered into an agreement for and/or charged an unreasonable fee (cheater)
As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits in Colorado sitting on the Colorado Supreme Court punished Doug by gifting him with a complimentary 2-year suspension of her law license effective November 2021.
As we speak (ca. May 2022), Doug will be allowed to resume his so-called practice of law with the Colorado Christian Defense Counsel LLC at 200 South Sheridan in Denver, Colorado.
