Attorney Matthew Shirk of Jacksonville, FL; ethical goblin

The state of Florida presented Matthew A. Shirk with a law license in 2020 after he graduated from Florida Coastal University of School of Law.

The Florida State Bar found Matty guilty of engaging in the following misconduct, all of which took place while he was employed as an Assistant Public Defender for Florida's Fourth Judicial Circuit, which covers Clay, Duval, and Nassau Counties.

  • Fired three female employees after confrontation with his wife
  • Hired two women who worked at a Hooters=style restaurant called Whiskey River to work at the Public Defender’s Office
  • Matty’s hiring practices of female employees was outside of normal hiring practices
  • Revealed information about a former child client’s defenses to murder allegations to a documentary film crew, after the child had entered a plea in the case

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Florida Supreme Court punished Matty by gifting him with a complimentary 6-month suspension of his law license and fined him $6,000.00.

As we speak (ca. May 2021), Matty practices his brand of law at 25 North Market Street in Jacksonville, Florida.
