Commissioner Alan Friedenthal of Los Angeles; Gadaffi Wannabee, Dufus

The state of California presented Alan Friedenthal with a law license in 1985 after he graduated from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles; a third tier law school.

In 2005 Alan succeeded in duping the 400 Los Angeles County Superior Court Judges into electing him as a Commissioner on the Superior Court. Alan was sworn in by his wife Steff Padilla who duped the Superior Court Judges into electing her as a Commissioner in 2005.

Court Commissioners in California Superior Courts serve the same functions as elected judges. The only difference is that the voters have had the rights to reject someone of Friedenthal’s ilk at the polls.

In early 2012, the California Judicial Commission found Commissioner Alan Friedenthal guilty of the following misconduct.
  1. Making discourteous, undignified, gratuitous and denigrating remarks to litigants, attorneys and related parties in open court
  2. Attempting to engage in humor at the expense of litigants
  3. Engaging in conduct that reflected embroilment in various cases
  4. Conveyed the appearance of bias in numerous cases
  5. Engage in improper ex part communications
  6. Failed to disclose on the record information that was relevant to the question of his disqualification from various cases
Friedenthal was the subject of numerous complaints filed with the Administrative Judge from litigants who appeared before him in family court matters. In one case involving a Latino father, Alan ordered him to pay $4,000 in guardian ad litem attorney fees for his son. When the father said he needed to arrange payments because he didn’t have $4,000 Alan threatened to have the child sent to Mexico to live with his grandparents.

Alan delighted in belittling the litigants who had to appear before him. When the complaints became overwhelming, the Administrative Judge entered an order prohibiting Alan from sitting on any future cases in Family Court.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Judicial Commission punished Alan by gifting him with a public admonishment.

As we speak (ca. April 2012) Alan continues to sit as a Commissioner on the Los Angeles Superior Court.
