Attorney Michael Yopp of Dunn, NC; serial thief

The state of North Carolina provided Michael L. Yopp with a law license in 1989 after he graduated from the University of Florida School of Law.

The Committee on Professional Conduct found Mikey guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Misappropriated client funds (thief)
  • Used funded from client personal injury settlement check to pay for his personal expenses
  • Used refund check of $1,790.10 from client’s medical providers to pay for his own personal expenses (crook)
  • After collecting one-third of settlement payments, he took an additional fee from the settlement proceeds (theif)
  • Commingled client funds with personal funds
  • Failed to reconcile trust account balances with funds he was supposed to be holding in trust for all his clients on at least a quarterly basis

As a direct consequence of his misconduct the Committee on Professional Conduct ordered that Mikey be disbarred. Unvbelievably, the same Committee voited to reinstate Mikey’s law license several years later.

And lastly, because Attorney Misfits in North Carolina are held to a much lower standard of conduct then everyone else, Mikey was never criminally charged with larceny or grand theft regarding his illegal misappropriation of client funds.

As we speak (ca. February 2020) Mikey the Thief practices at 608 North Ellis Avenue, North Carolina.
