Attorney George Marcus of Portland, ME; alleged fraudster

The state of Maine presented George Marcus with a law license in 1976 after he graduated from the University of Chicago School of Law.

In one matter, two women alleged in a August 2018 lawsuit that Georgie and his firm schemed with a former Portland developer Michael Liberty to defraud investors out of nearly $50 million. (Megan Doyle)

The SEC has charged Liberty and others with tricking people into putting money into a tech startup and instead used the funds for chartered flights, expensive homes and cars, production of a movie and even the purchase of a dairy farm in Maine.

Charlie, who was Liberty’s attorney, is among those facing charges in the SEC’s lawsuit. He is accused of providing legal advice on handling the investments and drafting documents that misrepresented or omitted facts about the investments.

All that remains now is to see how long it takes Georgie and his fellow comrades to cop a plea and limit the amount of a fine they will likely be faced to pay the SEC and how much they’ll agree to settle with the plaintiffs regarding the SEC’s fraud charges against Liberty, et al.

As we speak (ca. September 2018), Georgie practices with Marcus Clegg at One Canal Plaza in Portland, Maine.
