Ex. Judge Monty Doggett of Natchitoches, LA; celebrated drunk, loser

In 1996, Monty Doggett succeeded in duping the voters of Natchitoches Parish into electing him as a judge to the 10th Judicial District Court.

From the time Monty ascended to his judicial office, he dedicated the vast majority of time, on and off the bench as a certified drunk. Eventually, the Judicial Commission filed misconduct charges against Monty.

Monty was found guilty of being in a persistent state of drunkenness while on the bench and for actually issuing warrants even though he was so drunk that he couldn’t even read them. Is this a prosecutor’s dream come true or what?

Even though his oath mandated that the prosecutor report Monty’s drunkenness to the proper authorities, he never did. He was obviously more interested in winning than in assuring that those appearing before Monty were afforded their constitutional rights.

On one occasion, Monty was so drunk he couldn’t even make it out of his chambers into the courtroom; thereby causing court to be canceled for the day.

On another occasion, Monty was so drunk that his staff cleared the public from the hallways outside the courtroom so he could be carried out of his office by sheriff’s deputies. This incident occurred prior to 10:00 a.m., meaning Monty was loop-legged well before he arrived at the courthouse at about 8:00 a.m.

Monty admitted that he drank a bottle of vodka every day of the week; however, he did not indicate whether it was a 5th, a quart or a gallon. After 30 years of practice, I’m inclined to believe it was likely a gallon.

Monty said his alcoholism is not permanent and is curable, and he pointed out that “it can be handled” with proper treatment that he has and is receiving.” Sure it can Monty! Just like Tom Delay’s unethical behavior isn’t permanent and is curable.    Let’s hear it for Monty!

As a result of his misconduct, the Louisiana Supreme Court ordered that Monty be removed from office.

An unreliable source indicated that Monty is currently employed as a consultant for the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee.
