Attorney Thomas Doherty of Chicago; cheating slacker

The state of Illinois presented Thomas Gerard Doherty with a law license in 1982 after he graduated from John Marshall Law School.

The Illinois Registration and Disciplinary Commission found Tommy guilty of the following misconduct.

• Neglected of a several legal matters entrusted to him
• Failed to timely file lawsuit on client’s behalf
• Gross negligence in failure to file client lawsuit led to tolling of statute of limitations on client’s legal claims
• Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
• Failed to seek client’s lawful objectives through reasonable means
• Failed to carry out a contract of employment for professional services
• Caused prejudice or damage to client during course of representation
• Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty or misrepresentation
• Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
• Failed to keep client informed of status of legal matter
• Failed to promptly refund unearned advance fee (cheater)

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Illinois Supreme Court punished Tommy by gifting him with a complimentary stayed 1-month suspension of his law license.

In truth, the comedians sitting on the Illinois Supreme Court didn’t mete out any meaningful punishment to Tommy.
