Today’s Public Official Misfit: City Treasurer Anthony Burfoot of Norfolk City, VA

In early 2016 Norfolk city treasurer Anthony Burfoot was indicated by a federal jury on public corruption charges. The criminal indictment alleged that while he was a Norfolk councilman, vice mayor and chief deputy treasurer, Tony performed official acts for people who had matters pending before the council in exchange for money, car payments and home appliances.

In total, Tony faces eight (8) counts which include conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud, conspiracy to obtain property under color of official right, and perjury.

The indictment states that Tony supported measures that would be beneficial to Tivest Development company in exchange for home improvements and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. He was also indicted for promising to support another developer’s plan in exchange for $25,000 in cash.

All that’s left now is to see when Tony enters into a plea agreement with the federal prosecutor.

While we speak (ca. May 2016), Tony remains sitting as the Norfolk City Treasurer in Norfolk, Virginia.
