Judge Sherry Heitler of New York City; ethical gremlin

The state of New York Sherry presented Klein Heitler with a law license in 1977 after she graduated from Fordham University Law School.

For the past twenty-one years (1994 to 2015), Sherry has had her significant snout firmly implanted in the public trough.

In one matter, Judge Heitler presided over asbestos related cases involving Sheldon Silver’s former law firm. Silver is the former speaker of the house who has been indicted on numerous corruption charges. In this case, Heitler was accused of giving the Silver firm special treatment. (New YorkPost)

Federal prosecutors are engaged in an ongoing investigation as to whether civil asbestos-related lawsuits received “red-carpet treatment” by Judge Heitler. The feds are investigating Heitler’s court over its alleged ties to Sheldon Silver. Dozens of asbestos lawsuit were filed by Weitz & Luxenberg, where Silver was “of counsel” and received $5.3 million in what the Feds said were kickbacks.

After being assigned to preside over asbestos cases, Judge Heitler reversed a 20-year court ruling that specifically prohibited the awarding of punitive damages in asbestos cases, thereby allowing for larger jury awards

Over a four-year-period of time, and after Heitler’s punitive damage award reversal, Weitz & Luxenberg raked in $273.5 million of the $313.5 million awarded by New York City juries in 15 mesothelioma verdicts. Of the $273.5 million in jury awards, the Weitz firm netted at least $110 million.

Heitler is yet another unethical judge who has cheerfully acted on behalf of personal injury attorneys to the detriment of the justice system and the defendant’s she so willingly allowed plaintiff’s attorneys to take to the shed.

As we speak (ca. October 2015) Judge Heitler continues to sit as an Associate Justice of the New York Supreme Court (trial court) in New York, New York.
