Congratulations to….
Liberty Counsel Today’s “Bullshit”Award Winner
This isn’t the first Award presented to Liberty Counsel and its chief attorney Mat Staver. In the past, they has been the recipient of seventeen (17) Awards in various categories. Those awards are listed at the end of this article and can be viewed by going to the listed categories.
Liberty Counsel is an offshoot of Liberty University Law School which was founded by the infamous bigot Rev. Jerry Lamon Falwell, Sr.
It should be noted that out of 205 ABA (American Bar Association) accredited law schools in the nation, Liberty was ranked No. 186. In a never ending attempt to prove that the intellectually infirm individuals running Liberty Counsel are dyed-in-the-wool bigots, they recently (early August 2015) asked public officials from county clerks to governors to totally ignore the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality.
In one matter, the buffoons at Liberty are representing fellow bigot Kim Davis, a Kentucky clerk who refuses to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. Liberty’s laughable argument in Davis’ case is that her religious liberty is being violated because she is being forced to do her job and issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. (Miranda Blue)
Liberty had the chutzpah (means audacity or arrogance, Jethro) to argue in a court filing that marriage equality actually imposes an unconstitutional “religious (or anti-religious) test for holding office” because people [bigots] like Davis who don’t want to issue marriage licenses to gay couples aren’t allowed to refuse to do so.
In a lame effort at levity, Liberty also claimed the following in court filings.
Liberty’s argument is so farcical that the judge ought to sanction them for engaging in overt frivolity. Since Ms. Davis is a public servant she has no constitutional right to deny government services to anyone. If Liberty’s asinine argument was valid, then the following state licensed persons could also refuse to provide services to gay couples or any other minority by merely claiming a “religious right” to discriminate.
It goes without saying that if government agency employees can lawfully discriminate against gay couples under the guise of “religious freedom,” then state employees should also be able to discriminate against African-Americans, Latinos, Jews, Mormons, Asians, Muslims and Native Americans by asserting that their religious conscience would be “irreversibly and substantially harmed” if denied such a right.
Clearly, one cannot limit a “religious right” to discriminate against gay couples and then deny that same right to other bigots and racist. Put simply, all racists and bigots must be treated equally under the law.
Congrats Liberty Counsel; keep up the good work! We should let everyone know of your amazing record as one of Americas Least Appreciated “Bulshitters”; you are far too humble.
